What to Expect on Your First Dhow Khasab Tours Experience

You have booked it. The confirmation is in your inbox. Now you are wondering what actually happens on the day.

Here is everything — from the moment you wake up in Dubai to the moment you drive home with a sunburned nose and a memory card full of dolphin photos.

The Night Before

Lay everything out before you sleep. Swimming suit, sunscreen, sunglasses, a light jacket, comfortable shoes, your passport, and some cash in Omani Rials. Add a waterproof phone case if you have one.

Set your alarm early. If you are coming from Dubai you need to leave before 6 AM to make it comfortably for the 9:30 AM reporting time at the Dhow Khasab Tours office.

Do not leave packing for the morning. Morning-you will not thank night-you for that decision.

The Drive and Border Crossing

If you booked transport through Dhow Khasab Tours your driver handles everything. You sit, relax, and watch the landscape change as Dubai's highways give way to mountains and sea.

If you are driving yourself — fuel up the night before, have your passport and car documents within easy reach, and follow the E11 highway north through Ras Al Khaimah toward the Tibat border crossing.

The border itself is straightforward. UAE exit, Oman entry, visa on arrival for most nationalities, and you are through. First-time border crossers always say it was easier than they expected.

The mountain road from the border to Khasab takes about 45 minutes. It winds through dramatic rocky peaks with the sea appearing far below at various points. This is where you first understand that you are somewhere genuinely different.

Arriving at the Office — 9:30 AM

The Dhow Khasab Tours office is near the Lulu Hypermarket in Khasab. The staff will be expecting you. Check in, confirm your booking, and the team will brief you on the day — what to expect, safety information, and where to go next.

This part takes maybe fifteen minutes. The staff are friendly and used to first-time visitors with questions. Ask anything you want to know here.

Boarding the Dhow — 10:00 AM

You walk to the port and see the dhow for the first time. Traditional wooden boat. Cushions and carpets laid out on the deck. A crew ready to welcome you on board.

You are handed cold water and soft drinks immediately. Fresh fruit — apples, bananas, oranges — is already set out. Omani tea and coffee available if you want it.

Find a comfortable spot on the deck. The boat leaves sharp at 10:00 AM so everyone settles in quickly.

As soon as the dhow moves away from the port and the fjords start opening up around you, every bit of tiredness from the early morning disappears.

10:45 AM — The Dolphins

Nobody is fully prepared for this moment even when they know it is coming.

The crew spots them before most passengers do. Then someone points. Then everyone moves to the sides of the boat at once.

Dolphins. Right there. Swimming alongside the dhow, jumping, spinning, playing in the bow wave like it is the best game they have ever invented. A whole pod sometimes — ten, twenty, thirty of them appearing from nowhere and filling the water around the boat.

Put the phone down for at least one minute and watch them with just your eyes. You will have plenty of photos. You only get the first time once.

11:30 AM — Snorkeling at Telegraph Island

The dhow anchors near Telegraph Island and this is your signal to change into your swimming suit if you have not already.

Snorkeling gear and life jackets are provided on board. The crew helps anyone who needs it with fitting the mask properly. Then you jump in.

The water is clear and warm. Fish appear immediately — colorful reef fish, schools moving together, the occasional larger species passing below. The coral is visible and healthy. Float there and look down and let your brain process the fact that you are snorkeling in one of the most beautiful spots in the Arabian Peninsula.

The stop at Telegraph Island is around 30 minutes. Most people say it goes by too fast.

1:00 PM — Lunch on the Boat

Back on board and the crew serves lunch while the dhow continues sailing.

Traditional Omani food. Fresh salad, rice, properly cooked fish or meat, bread, fruit, and unlimited soft drinks, water, tea, and coffee. Everything is laid out and you help yourself.

Eat on cushions with the fjord on all sides. Mountains reflected in the water. No traffic, no noise, no screens. Just food and scenery and people who all just had the same magical morning together.

Afternoon — Deeper Into the Fjords

After lunch the dhow goes further. Past Khor Sham — a 17-kilometer fjord with crystal clear calm water and mountains reflected perfectly in the surface. Past small fishing villages tucked into cliff faces with no roads connecting them to the outside world.

The afternoon pace is slower. Some people nap on the cushions. Some sit at the front of the boat and watch the water. Some talk to the crew and ask questions about the fjords and the people who live in them.

There is usually one more swimming stop in the afternoon. The water in the deeper parts of the fjords is even calmer and the setting is more dramatic.

4:00 PM — Back at Port

The dhow returns to the Khasab port by 4:00 PM. The crew ties up and everyone steps off slightly dazed from a full day of sun, water, dolphins, and Omani food.

This is the moment where people always say the same thing. That went too fast.

If you are driving back to Dubai, leave by 4:30 PM to arrive comfortably before evening. If you are staying overnight in Khasab, the rest of the evening is yours.

A Few Things First-Timers Always Ask

Will we definitely see dolphins? Almost certainly yes. Dhow Khasab Tours has been running these cruises since 2006 and dolphin sightings are very common in these waters. Nature cannot be guaranteed but the track record here is excellent.

Is it safe for non-swimmers? Yes. Life jackets are provided and the snorkeling stops are in calm shallow water. You do not have to get in if you do not want to. Plenty of people enjoy watching from the boat.

What if I get seasick? The fjord waters are very calm. Most people have no problem at all. If you know your stomach is sensitive, take a tablet before boarding just in case.

Can I bring my own food? You can bring snacks but a full lunch is provided so you probably will not need much. Alcohol is not permitted on the boat.

What should I wear? Swimming suit under light clothes. Bring a change of clothes for after swimming. Sun hat. Sunglasses. Flip flops for the boat and the port.

Final Thought

Your first Dhow Khasab Tours experience will probably go something like this. You will be tired on the drive there. You will wake up completely when the dolphins appear. You will float in water so clear it does not look real. You will eat a meal you did not expect to be that good. You will sit on a cushion in a fjord in the afternoon and feel something that is difficult to describe but very easy to recognize.

Peace. That is what it is.
